The Centrality of the Law

September 26, 2021 Pastor: Michael Foster Series: 1 Timothy

Scripture: 1 Timothy 1:8–11

Christian, the wrong use of something doesn’t invalidate the right use that same thing.

Every good thing made by God can be twisted to serve some evil purpose.

Listen to this quote from that great German reformer, Martin Luther:

“Do not suppose that abuses are eliminated by destroying the object which is abused. Men can go wrong with wine and women. Shall we then prohibit and abolish women? The sun, the moon, and the stars have been worshiped. Shall we then pluck them out of the sky?”

Is not this our tendency?

Someone misuses guns.

Therefore, make guns illegal.

There are abusive men.

Therefore, smash the patriarchy.

Some people get drunk.

Therefore, we must not even allow wine in communion.

Some institutional churches are unfaithful.

Therefore, all churches should be organic house churches.

Some churches teach license and/or legalism.

Therefore, the law is bad.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Paul says, 'The law is good.
